Cardinals fall to undefeated Racers in WHAC opener

(Ann Arbor, MI) The Concordia volleyball team kicked off conference play against the undefeated Racers of Northwestern Ohio. After the Racers took the first set by a score of 25-18, the Cardinals responded by winning the second set 25-22. UNOH would go onto win the next two sets and the match by a final score of 3-1.

1st Set – CUAA 18, UNOH 25

The Cardinals and Racers would stay within two points of each other throughout much of the first set. With the set being tied at 17 each, the Racers came out of a late timeout and went onto win the set 25-18 taking the 1-0 lead.

2nd Set – CUAA 25, UNOH 22

UNOH used their momentum of winning the first set by coming out to a quick 4-0 lead in the second set forcing the Cardinals to take a timeout. Concordia responded out the time out and went on a run of their own and took a 13-8 lead causing a Racer timeout. Once the Cardinals took control of the lead, they would never look back in the 2nd set eventually winning 25-22 off of a kill from Madelyn Kragt (SO/Grand Rapids, MI) set up by Hailey McCourt (SO/Toledo, OH).

3rd Set – CUAA 13, UNOH 25

Northwestern Ohio jumped out to another strong start in the 3rd set before the Cardinals came within 2 points early in the set. The Racers would eventually pull away and take the 3rd set by a score of 25-13, giving them a 2-1 lead.

4th Set – CUAA 12, UNOH 25

The Cardinals went back and forth with UNOH early in the first set before the Racers went on a short run of their own. Following a timeout midway through set number 4, Northwestern Ohio would pull away to win the set 25-12.

Gabrielle den Boer (SO/Canton, MI) led the Cardinals attack recording 9 kills in the match followed by Lena Thompson (JR/Howard City, MI) with 6. Kylie Frank (SR/Chelsea, MI) and Hailey McCourt paced Concordia recording 17 and 12 assists respectively.

What's Next?

Concordia will travel to Mishawaka, IN on Saturday, September 8th to compete against Bethel College in a non-conference match up. The Cardinals will return back home for a match up with the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech on September 14th at 7:00 PM.
