Minutewomen surge late to come back against Women's Hockey

(Canton, MI) The Cardinals took a break from CCWHA action as they welcomed the Minutewomen from Massachusetts to town on Thursday evening. The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Minutewomen scored three straight to come from behind and win the game.

Rose Lennon started between the pipes for the Cardinals and stopped 32 shots.

The first period started off with both sides only getting occasional looks at goal. Nicole Koops led a breakaway for what was the Cardinals' best chance in the early going, but the UMass goalie thwarted that opportunity.  Halfway through the period, Grace Dodgson found Hannah McCarthy who netted her first collegiate goal to give Concordia the lead. The Cardinals held onto the lead for the rest of the period, going into the first intermission up a score.

The Cards successfully killed a penalty to start the second period. Then in their first power play of the day, Concordia doubled their lead just seconds before the opportunity expired. Skylar Croft facilitated the goal, as she found Makayla Steinmetz for the power play score. Not long after, the Minutewomen had a shot from distance that found the far post to cut into Concordia's lead. Neither side broke through in the waning minutes of the period, so the Cardinals maintained another one goal lead at the second intermission.

Massachusetts evened up the game in the third period with a goal around seven minutes in. The Cardinals received a power play earlier on in the final period, but were unable to convert it. On the other hand, the Minutewomen were able to score on their first power play chance of the period and take their first lead of the match. Both sides fought down the stretch, with the Cardinals even pulling their goalie with a half minute remaining, but the game would finish at 3-2.

The Cardinals will remain at home tomorrow night, when they welcome Rhode Island to the Arctic Edge. Puck drop is set for 8:30 in Canton.
