Women's Hockey drops season opener against Miami (OH)

(Canton, MI) - Concordia women's hockey held their season opener on Friday night when they hosted Miami Ohio to begin a 2-game series.  The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead but eventually fell 5-2. 

 

Rose Lennon played a complete game in goal with 41 saves.  The Cardinals struck first with an unassisted goal by Grace Dodgson at the 4:34 mark of the contest.  Just under two minutes later, the team converted on the power play when Makayla Steinmetz scored with assists by Emma Shore and Sara Kaczmarek.  Miami Ohio broke the shutout with a goal, but CUAA held a 2-1 lead after the first period.  

 

Miami Ohio continued to rally with three goals in the third period to take the lead. The Cardinals had a 5-on-3 power play opportunity in the frame and matched the Red Hawks 13-13 on shots in the period.  However, CUAA trailed 4-2 heading to the second intermission. 

 

Early in the third period, the Red Hawks extended their lead with a goal.  The Cardinals kept battling with Emma Shore sending a pass to Dakota Harmon on a 2-on-1 leading to a shot by Harmon just wide of the net.  Mallory Collins also had a strong wrist shot for a good scoring chance.  Rose Lennon stayed active with 17 saves in the period, but CUAA fell by a final score of 5-2. 

 

Concordia will host Miami Ohio again tomorrow at 5pm in the Arctic Edge at Canton, MI.
