(Livonia, MI) - CUAA softball traveled to WHAC leader #11 Madonna University for a key doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals battled hard but fell 6-5 in a close game one and dropped an 8-0 contest in game two.
GAME ONE: MU 6, CUAA 5
Paige Anderson threw a complete game with one strikeout. The Cardinals took the lead in the first inning when Katie Tobias doubled to score Payton Lewis.
In the third inning, Maddy Greuter used an RBI single to drive in Payton Lewis. Elyse Brittain tacked on a 2-RBI double for a 4-0 lead.
Madonna fought back with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to pull ahead. In the seventh inning, Katie Tobias used a sacrifice fly to score Payton Lewis and tie the game. However, Madonna scored the winning run in the bottom half to claim a 6-5 win.
GAME TWO: MU 8, CUAA 0 – five innings
Elyse Brittain started on the mound, making one strikeout in two innings. Madonna took an early lead with one run in both the first and second innings.
Kendal Kahl came on to pitch in the third inning, throwing 1.2 innings total. Madonna extended their lead with two more runs in the third inning.
The Cardinals threatened in the fourth inning when Megan Martin drew a walk and Katie Tobias was hit by a pitch. However, Madonna prevented any runs from scoring in the inning and added four runs of their own in the bottom half.
Hannah Duchene secured the final out of the fourth inning. The Cardinals were unable to come back and fell 8-0 by the mercy rule.
CUAA will travel to University of Northwestern Ohio this Wednesday, April 16th, for a doubleheader starting at 3:30pm.
