Indiana Tech Remains Perfect After Sweeping Cardinals 3-0
(October 25, 2008 - Ft. Wayne, Ind.) -- Entering Saturday's game there were only two teams that hadn't suffered a loss this season in NAIA volleyball: #1 Fresno Pacific (20-0) and Concordia's opponent in #17 Indiana Tech (25-0, 8-0 WHAC). Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that remained true after Saturday as the home Warriors made quick work of Concordia with a three-set sweep 25-14, 25-18, 25-18. The loss drops the Cards to 15-21 overall and 1-9 in the WHAC.
Concordia had little answer for the Warriors as the Cards finished with only 24 kills as Sarah Iverson (So. - Grass Lake, Mich.) lead the team with seven for the afternoon. Shawna Dorton (Sr. - Lincoln Park, Mich.) added five while Danielle Guss (Fr. - Lambertville, Mich.) and Erica Manning (Sr. - St. Johns, Mich.) each had four.
The Warriors were lead by Ashley Hamilton who had 11 kills while Erika Stouder and Amber Birky each contributed six. The offense for Tech was ran with methodical precision by Laura Booker, who finished the match with 30 assists, while Rachel Compton had 17 for Concordia. But while Booker's teammates were finishing the attack, the Cards struggled as they had 16 attack errors to the Warriors nine.
Hamilton lead all players defensively with 10 digs, while Concordia was lead by Shilo Stewart's (Jr. - Brighton, Mich.) finishing with nine. But the Cardinal's defense was tested often as the squad struggled on serve reception as well as they finished with 13 errors to aid the Tech cause.
Despite dropping four conference matches in a row, Concordia still has a legitimate chance of making the postseason. The top six teams in the WHAC advance to the conference playoffs, and the Cardinals (1-9) are currently tied with Siena Heights for seventh, trailing UM-Dearborn (2-8) and Davenport (3-7).
With four WHAC matches remaining, Concordia will play all three of those they are battling with for a playoff spot. Their next match, Oct. 28, is at Davenport followed by a Oct. 30 trip to UM-Dearborn. After a home match against Aquinas on Nov. 4, the Cards host Siena Heights on Nov. 6 to close out the regular season.
A look at the schedules shows different teams have different advantages down the home stretch. Davenport plays all four games at home, but plays two of the top teams in the WHAC in Cornerstone and Madonna. UM-Dearborn plays three of four at home, with games against Aquinas and Cornerstone and a road game at Siena Heights. Concordia plays three games they are fighting for a spot with, but two of them are on the road. Siena Heights also plays three of the four teams, but they also have to play undefeated Indiana Tech on the road in addition to two other road games.
Here are the remaining games for the four teams fighting for the last two playoff spots:
