(August 30, 2008 - Chicago, Ill.) -- After two years of winning the consolation game of the volleyball Concordia Invitational Tournament, the Concordia Cardinals stepped it up this season as they remained remarkably hot at 7-1 on the season as they won the tourney this weekend after sweeping both opponents Saturday afternoon.
Concordia, off to their best start in 14 years, battled a feisty CU-Chicago squad in the opening match Saturday afternoon. The Cougars made the Cardinals work hard for the victory falling by a closer margin of defeat in each game: 25-21, 25-22, 26-24.
The win moved Concordia-Ann Arbor into the championship game against the Falcons of Concordia-Wisconsin. On Friday the two teams went the distance, but on Saturday afternoon the Cardinals were too much prevailing in straight sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-21.
While no MVP was announced, the Cardinals put two players on the all-tournament team in seniors Erica Manning (Sr. - St. Johns, Mich.) and Shawna Dorton (Sr. - Lincoln Park, Mich.).
Concordia will return to Michigan and resume play on Sept. 3 with a non-conference tilt at Spring Arbor University.
