Volleyball drops regular season finale 3-1 to Golden Eagles

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia volleyball wrapped up their WHAC regular season on Tuesday night when they hosted #21-ranked Cornerstone.  The Cardinals looked to avenge a loss in the teams' previous meeting last Friday, when the Golden Eagles claimed a win in straight sets.  CUAA came out playing with high energy and won the first set, but Cornerstone claimed the final three sets to win the match.

Kayla Peters led the team with 13 kills while tying Madalyn Lisman with a team-high 3 blocks.  Abigail Austin finished first with 18 assists.  Tara Schatzle led the back end with 22 digs while adding 3 service aces.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, CU 23

Kayla Peters had the first Concordia kill, tying the set 1-1.  Cornerstone jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but the Cardinals cut into the deficit with a Tara Drinane kill and a Tara Schatzle service ace.  The Golden Eagles led 16-12 midway through the set, but a 6-0 CUAA run lifted the Cardinals ahead with Tara Schatzle making the go-ahead ace.  While Cornerstone forced a late 22-22 tie, Concordia finished out the set with Abigail Austin making the winning kill.

 

Set 2 – CU 25, CUAA 21

Kaitlin Veihl and Kayla Peters combined for a block to begin set 2.  Concordia built a 7-4 lead after a Hailey McCourt service ace.  Kayla Peters and Tara Drinane continued to make kills, but Cornerstone tied the set 12-12.  Abigail Austin notched an ace and CUAA led 16-13 later in the set, but the Golden Eagles steadily worked their way back into the lead.  Despite a late block from Abigail Austin and Madalyn Lisman, Cornerstone won set two 25-21.

 

Set 3 – CU 25, CUAA 17

Kayla Peters had the first kill in set 3.  Madalyn Lisman and Tara Drinane had early kills as the lead shifted hands multiple times.  Alexandra Lucaj made a pair of kills to give CUAA a 1-point lead, but Cornerstone slowly worked their way ahead.  The Golden Eagles closed the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-17.

 

Set 4 – CU 25, CUAA 12

Kaitlin Veihl made the first Concordia kill in set 4, ending a 10-0 Cornerstone run.  Kayla Peters and Madalyn Lisman combined for an early block after a long volley.  Peters and Lisman along with Tara Drinane recorded kills down the stretch, but Cornerstone controlled the pace of play and finished the match with a 25-12 win.

 

Concordia will now wait to find out their first-round opponent in the WHAC conference tournament.  The first round begins on Tuesday, April 6.
