CUAA 10, Milligan 4

CUAA 7, Milligan 8 - 10 innings

(Milligan, TN) - The Concordia Baseball team headed to Tennessee this past weekend to kick off their 2012 season against Milligan College. The Cardinals first two games were underneath the lights as game one start time was 7pm. The Cards scuffled in these first two-game set against the Buffaloes Friday Night, managing 4 runs on 4 hits under the lights. Concordia gave way to the Buffaloes falling 10-1. Senior, Jim Rousseau pitched 3 innings and received the loss for the Cards, while Fleenor threw a complete game for Milligan and got the win. The Buffaloes came out on top in game two after a few errors from the Cardinals' defense in a 10-3 decision.

Concordia turned in a much better performance during Saturday's double header as they cashed in 10 runs on 11 hits in the first game, 3 of which came on a 3-run home run by sophomore, Chandler Sidwell. Garrett Keeler turned in a solid start, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits in 4 innings to gain his first victory of the season. Milligan's starter, Walker was charged with the loss as the Buffaloes only managed 4 runs of support. The Cards would roll 10-4. The final game of the weekend proved to be the most dramatic. Concordia started off the game with a run in the top of the first, but Milligan answered back with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Cardinals got the bats working again in the third, loading the bases with nobody out and cashing in one run on a 6-4-3 double play before a 2-out double from Jared Janssen score the second. The Buffaloes answered back again in the home half of the inning with two more runs. Concordia led 7-3 going into the bottom half of sixth, but Milligan managed to score 4 runs on 4 hits to tie the game. Cardinal closer, Ryan Noack came in to pitch in the sixth and would stay on the mound until the tenth inning, when a bases loaded single would end the game in favor of Milligan. Despite a heart breaking 7-8 loss Noack turned in a solid performance for the Cards pitching 4 innings in relief, giving up just the 1 run and striking out 6.

The Cardinals will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Owensboro, KY to face off against Brescia College. The Cards will play a double header on Saturday, Feb. 25th starting at 2pm and then again on Sunday, Feb. 26th with the first game starting at noon. Good Luck Cards.

(Grand Rapids, MI) - The Concordia Women's Basketball team headed out to Cornerstone University on Wednesday for their second to last conference game of the season. The Cardinals were looking to add another game to their conference win streak and were looking to beat Cornerstone for the first time in the Gorski era on the road.

The Lady Cards would do so, winning 66-59, making it a 10-game win streak in the WHAC and beating Cornerstone on their court for the first time ever in the Gorski era. The Cardinals got out to a big lead to start, scoring the first 10 points of the ball game. They would take a 14-point lead into the break. Cornerstone made an effort to close the gap in the second half, but the Cards stayed on top throughout and never trailed in the ball game.

Kortni Elsworth led the Cards in scoring with 16 points, shooting 7/9 from the floor and 2/3 from outside. Elsworth was followed by Hannah Sabol with 14 and Brittany Simmons with 12. Brittany Gibson led in rebounds with 6, and tied Elsworth for most assists in the game with 5 each. This win keeps the Cardinals tied for first place in the WHAC with Davenport University. Both teams are 15-2 in conference play and 25-4 overall. It should be an exciting conclusion to the season as both teams play their last games this weekend. The Cards will host Indiana Tech (14-15, 6-11 WHAC) while Davenport will be on the road vs. #RV Cornerstone (18-11, 11-6 WHAC).

#6 CUAA 77, Aquinas 56

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Women's Basketball team made short work of the Aquinas Saints on Saturday and also made school history. Their fourth consecutive win improved their overall record to 24-4 and their conference record to 14-2, keeping them in a tie for first place with Davenport University in the WHAC. This win also made the 2011-12 Cardinals the new all-time leader in wins in a season (24) in the Cardinals' record books. The visiting Saints would fall to an overall record of 15-12 and an 8-8 record in the WHAC.

The Cardinal women jumped out to an early lead that would last them for the duration of Saturday's game. Concordia would best Aquinas in every statistical category during the first half of play, and a 16-point effort by Hannah Sabol would bring the home team into halftime with an 18-point advantage. The second half of the game would be more of the same story. A nine-point run in the first 10 minutes would put the Cardinals up by 34 points and allow their bench to get some much deserved minutes and to take them the rest of the way. The final score: Concordia 77, Aquinas 56.

Hannah Sabol led all scorers with 22 points and also managed 7 rebounds, while Brooke Adams and Kortni Elsworth had 12 and 10 points respectively. Leading in other categories was Brittany Gibson with 7 assists and Kelly Cieslak with 9 boards and 3 blocks. The Concordia Women look to extend their winning streak and their new all-time record this Wednesday, February 15 during an away game at #25 Cornerstone University. Good Luck Cards.
