John Schnack has many things on his plate as he takes on two new roles at Concordia University as a Technology Specialist within Information Technology Department as well as being named the school's new head coach for men's golf. One thing Schnack can remove is introducing himself to all of his players.
Schnack has already begun to settle in after moving to Ann Arbor from Decatur, Illinois. Upon arrival of the fall athletes, Schnack will meet most of his team for the very first time, save for one player: his son Eric, who will be a freshman on the squad after a successful career at Decatur Lutheran High School.
Schnack was the head coach of Decatur Lutheran for the past three seasons and served as the school's assistant coach for one season prior to taking the head post.
"We will focus on the mental aspect and drill home mechanics," said Schnack. "We must stress course management and playing smart golf."
Schnack send he will spend the summer month of practice getting to know the nuances of each golfer and teaching them his "play hard and play well" philosophy.
"More importantly, they should be comfortable playing in a Christ-centered atmosphere where while we want to play well, we are also going to have some fun too," Schnack said.
Schnack knows the Concordia system well, having been a graduate of Concordia University-River Forest in 1975 in Elementary Education with an emphasis on science.
Having temporarily settled into a residence on campus, Schnack will be seeking a home with his wife of 32 years, Debby. In addition to son Eric the Schnack's have two other children: Nick (who is entering his third year at Western Illinois University majoring in law enforcement) and Sam (who will be a sophomore at Lutheran Westland High School this fall).
