Steve Montgomery
Head Coach - 4th Season

Steve Montgomery enters his 4th year as Head Cross Country & Track and field coach at Concordia University. Steve graduated from Eastern Michigan University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and was a four-year letterman as a sprinter on the track team. Steve ran events ranging from the 60m dash to the 400m dash, and participated on many relay teams. He became a multi-certified teacher with certifications to teach Industrial Technology, Science, Photography and Graphic Communication. Steve spent 8 years in Livonia as a teacher and coach and the past 30 in Farmington teaching science and coaching Track, Cross-Country, Football and Soccer. Steve has always, right from the beginning, been a very enthusiastic and positive coach and teacher.

Steve started his coaching career with Football, Track and Field, and Cross Country. Steve was a quick study in the sport of cross-country and had immediate success. In his first job as cross-country coach at Holmes Middle School in Livonia his team ran away with the city championship. Next he moved on to Ladywood High School where, in his first year as coach, his team won the State Championship, while his number one runner won the meet. The following year they had another good showing, placing third.

With these successes under his belt, he was offered the head coaching job at Schoolcraft College. There he coached both the men's team and the women's team. His teams had many high finishes in the state and regional contests, earning him the honor of Regional Coach of the Year, twice. His teams placed 3rd, 5th, and 7th in the NJCAA National Finals. There were also many individual successes for the student/athletes on his teams.

While coaching at Holmes, and Ladywood, and Schoolcraft College, Steve also started and coached an AAU track club, which he called The Livonia Hawks. This track club participated in Olympic Development meets across the country. The athletes who joined the club came from all around the Metro-Detroit area, and represented many age groups. Steve's goal was to train high quality athletes, while still having fun doing it. He and the club were very successful. Not only did they have fun but, they were also State, Regional, and even National champions in the Junior Olympic meets in many different events. The Livonia Hawks also participated in Olympic Development Cross-Country meets, where again his athletes finished very high in the nation in their age groups. Many of these athletes went on to have very successful college running careers.

Steve has a wealth of experience in coaching all of the various events of track and field. Because of his own participation in the decathlon, he was able to bring the knowledge of those many varied events to his coaching. While coaching at Ladywood High School and Bentley High School, both in Livonia, he had many athletes qualify for the State Final Meet. In addition, he had athletes place in the State Finals in many events including everything from the 400m to the 3200m, as well as all of the field events, with a State Champion in the discus. His team at Ladywood placed 2nd one year and 4th the next, while his team at Bentley placed 10th the following year. Furthermore, Ladywood was Conference Champions two years running.

More recently, Steve spent a year coaching track at Farmington High School, Salem High School, and Walled Lake Western High School, respectively. While coaching at Farmington, Steve helped coach long jumper, Bettie Wade to the State Championship, while the team placed second in the conference, forth at the Regional, sixth in Oakland County and 16th in the state. Bettie Wade is now a nationally ranked Pentathlete at the University of Michigan. At Salem, the team won the City Championship, was forth at the Regional, third in the Western Lakes Conference, and had five state qualifiers. At Walled Lake Western, the team was well on its way to a nice turn around toward becoming more a successful team.

In 2004 Steve was the assistant cross-country coach to Boaz Cheboyuwa here at Concordia. Although he very much enjoyed his experience coaching with Boaz, and the wonderful atmosphere at Concordia, for financial reasons, Steve had to take another position in 2005. But now, Steve is very happy to be back at Concordia, and is ready to give all of his knowledge, energy, and enthusiasm to the cross-country and track programs here. Steve looks forward to creating competitive cross-country and track teams for both the men and women, while, as always, having fun doing it!

Steve and his wife Julie have five daughters: Crystal, Marissa, Lisa, Linda, and Brianna. Steve enjoys going to the many sporting events that his daughters participate in, which includes watching Linda and Lisa run track and cross-country first for The University of Michigan on now Front Line Track Club, and Marissa compete in triathlons.
