(Kalamazoo, MI)--Saturday August 28th was a history making day for Concordia University Ann Arbor. It marked the first time in the school's 48 year history that the Cardinal Football team took the field against an opponent. Even though it was a scrimmage, it was an historical event for Concordia. The Cardinal football team played against the Kalamazoo College Varsity football program in a scrimmage type format. The day opened with a 7 on 7 type of scrimmage. The Concordia defense on one end of the field, and the offense on the other. Each team was able to run about 20 offensive plays.
At the conclusion of the 7 on 7 event, the real scrimmage began. The Cardinal defense was the first to take the field against the Kalamazoo Hornets offense. Each team was given 16 plays. If a first down was achieved, then the ball would continue to move up the field until the 16 play limit had been reached. If a first down was not attained, the ball would be moved 20 yards and a new series would continue until the play limit was reached.
The Cardinal defense was swarming on the day, led by their Freshman safety Mario Hinojosa (Allen Park, MI) and Freshman Corner Matt Strzalkowski (Brighton, MI). Lance Griffus (West Branch, MI) and Rashad Smith (Dallas, TX) were also standout athletes on the defensive side of the ball for the Cardinals.
On the offensive side, the Cardinals were led by Running Back Dominic Trogan (Essexville, MI) and Wide Receiver Askia Bennett (New Orleans, LA). The Cardinals were able to hook up on several big plays and moved the ball down the field.
The first ever game for the Concordia Football team will take place at Defiance College on Monday September 6th at 4:00 PM. The Cardinals first and only home contest will take place on Saturday September 11th at Huron High School against the University of Michigan Flint. Kickoff time is 1:00 PM.
