(April 24, 2010 - Grand Rapids, Mich.) -- It's hard not to consider an event very successful when a record is set, let alone three. That's just the scenario the Concordia outdoor track and field team saw on Saturday afternoon when a trio of performers set new standards for the Cardinal program: Jim Abrams in the 800-meter run, Dorian Lancaster in the long jump and Adora Morrow in the triple jump.
The day began with the men's 1500-meter run, with Abrams just missing a Concordia school record when he finished 11th overall in the event with a time of 4:09.82. Will Cantrell continued a successfull second season with his time of 4:26.74, which earned him a top 20 finish; while Tyler Case and Ryan Burmeister finished neck-and-neck in 24th and 25th, respectively. Case had a time of 4:38.51 while Burmeister crossed at 4:39.18.
Abrams wouldn't miss on a school record in his second event, the 800-meter run, when he finished in the top 10 overall as his time of 1:58.47 not only set a new standard for the Cardinals but gave him an eighth place finish in the event. Cantrell was 28th overall at 2:!3.27 while Chad McMullen, running in his first official event for the program, was 29th at 2:13.53.
Not to be outdone, Lancaster came out in the men's long jump and decided to give the Cards two records for the men in one day. His jump of 21'4.75" was good enough for fourth place overall on the day. Further establishing Concordia as a strong team in the event were the Joseph brothers, Maxime and Bernard, who gave the Cards three finishers in the top ten. Maxime Joseph was seventh overall with a distance of 20'3.75", while Bernard was eighth at 19'8".
Both Joseph brothers would also participate in the men's triple jump, with Maxime again finishing ahead of his sibling. With a distance of 42'6", Maxime was sixth overall while Bernard was two spots behind in eighth with a distance of 41'6".
Jordan Muschiama picked up a top 10 finish in the javelin throw with his distance of 130'8", while Rocko Holmes was 16th overall with a throw of 35'2" in the shot put. Holmes would join Morgan Schwab in the discus throw, with Holmes earning a 27th place finish with a distance of 97'1", while Schwab was 25th overall in the event with a throw of 110'11".
For the women, Morrow had a busy and rewarding day. Morrow took to the triple jump and was able to register a distance of 31'4.75", setting a new Concordia record.
To further a great day, Morrow was sixth in the women's long jump witha distance of 14'7.75". Morrow was joined in the women's 100-meter dash by Chloe Metcalf. The duo finished 10th and 11th with Morrow just edging her teammate with a tenth-place finish with a time of 13.88 seconds. Metcalf, was 11th overall at 14.58.
While Morrow would compete in the 200-meter dash, and finish 15th overall with a time of 28.25 seconds, Metcalf was looking to be the fourth Card to set a school record on the day in the javelin throw. However, nearly nine hours into the day and strong winds in front of her, Metcalf just missed but finished in the top 10 with the ninth spot and a throw of 75'8".
All that remains of the season for the program are the WHAC Championships on May 7, with the Cardinals looking to score well individually and as a team.
