(April 22, 2010 - Ann Arbor, Mich) The Cardinal softball team continued to struggle against Madonna pitching as the Concordia hitters could only collect six hits on the day en route to losses of 8-0 and 9-3 on Wednesday evening in Livonia.
Concordia (8-28, 3-17) fell victim to the solid pitching of Madonna's Jess Irwin who tossed a no hitter in the opening game. The Cardinals would strike out 10 times and only reach base once thanks to a walk. Meanwhile, Madonna would collect ten hits and score eight runs to give Jeni Bollenbacher (So - Edwardsburgh, Mich) her 11th loss of the season to go along with her five wins.
Despite the loss in the second game, Concordia would manage three runs on six hits by six different Cardinals. Freshman Hannah Sabol (Shelby Twp, Mich) would connect for a double down the left field line to start the second inning. Breannae King (So - Garden City, Mich) would step up and single to score Sabol and give the visitors their first run of the day.
Down 5-1 in the top of the sixth, Concordia would strike again off a two run homer by Catherine Herriman (So - Adrian, Mich). Senior Ashley Junga (Macomb, Mich) who had reached on a bunt single would score on the home run by Herriman. Unfortunately, that would be the final runs of the game for the Cardinals as they dropped the final game of the day.
Concordia is hoping for a big weekend in Grand Rapids as they travel to Cornerstone (9-30, 4-14) on Friday followed by a Saturday double header at Aquinas (21-18, 9-9). The Cardinals lost to the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone 7-1 and 8-4 on April 3. Aquinas is also looking for the series sweep against Concordia as they won both games back on April 5 in Ann Arbor.
