Cornerstone 66, Concordia 58
(Feb. 25, 2010 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) - In a season full of pleasant surprises and a miraculous turn-around, the Concordia women's basketball team needed one more miracle, but were unable to find it as the Cardinals fell to the Cornerstone Golden Eagles 66-58 Thursday night. The game was the first-ever postseason game on the Cardinals home court.
Concordia found themselves in a whole early as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 13-2 lead a little more than six minutes into play. Showing the grit that made them a formidable opponent all season, the Cardinals put together a 10-point run to cut the lead to a bucket at 18-16.
Four different Cards registered points in the run with Kortni Elsworth (So. - Goodrich, Mich.) leading the way with four.
Elsworth finished with a team-high 18 points with three rebounds and three assists.
Concordia would continue to battle and eventually found themselves down a single digit at 22-21 before the Golden Eagles finished the half with a 13-point spurt over the last five minutes of play to head to the locker room up 35-21.
The lead would eventually grow to 15 points for Cornerstone before Concordia mounted another comeback. Down 43-28 with a little less than 15 minutes remaining, the Cards would score 13 of the next 17 points to find themselves down a half-dozen.
Elsworth again was the lead catalyst during the stretch as she dumped in seven points in the four-minute span. Elyse Schlump (Jr. - Cedar Springs, Mich.) added a quartet of points - starting and ending the run with makes - helping the Cardinal cause.
Schlump finished the night with a dozen points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Concordia would eventually cut the lead to four but on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to two or fewer, the Cardinals came up short.
Melissa Veltkamp would hit a three-pointer for Cornerstone and the wind was nearly taken out of the sails of Concordia. A deep three from Alicia TerHaar signaled the death knell as Cornerstone regained a double-digit lead at 64-51.
Seniors Megan Mannarino (Sr. - South Lyon, Mich.) and Casey Cole (Sr. - Jackson, Mich.) would score down the stretch registering their final points in a Cardinal uniform. Mannarino hit one of two free throws leaving her with a pair of points on the night with four assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals. Cole finished with two points.
Hannah Sabol (Fr. - Shelby Twp., Mich.) finished with her 13th double-double of the year as she had 11 points and 12 rebounds, as well as a trio of swipes.
Robyn Veltkamp was Cornerstone's most effective weapon as she hit 11-of-15 of her shots and finished with a game-high 27 points. Sister Melissa Veltkamp had 11 points while Brooke Carter had a double-double for the Golden Eagles with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Carter also had four blocks.
Concordia (18-13) finished the season with the second highest win total in program history and the first winning campaign in 26 years.
Cornerstone (16-14) advances to the WHAC semifinal round and will play top-seed Davenport.
