(Feb. 23, 2010 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- Historically speaking, the Concordia men's basketball team hasn't fared well in the postseason, nor in games against Siena Heights University. Since entering the WHAC in 1992-93, the Cardinals are 2-14 in the playoffs and 10-23 overall against the Saints. However, since head coach Ben Limback assumed the reigns, the Cards have beaten SHU nine times, including both playoff victories. On Wednesday, the Cardinals are relying more on the recent past then ancient history.
Concordia was 1-21 against Siena Heights from the onset of the WHAC until midway through the 2005-06 season. Since knocking off the Saints 85-71 in Ann Arbor on Feb. 1, 2006 Concordia is 9-2 in the series including their only two playoff victories: a 63-60 shocker at Siena Heights on Feb. 22, 2006 and a win on Feb. 22, 2007 when the Cards won their first-ever home playoff game 77-67.
After dropping the first three postseason games to the Saints, the two recent wins have the Cardinals 2-3 in the playoffs all-time against Siena Heights.
This season the two teams split their two meetings, with each team winning on their home court. The last win for the Cardinals in Adrian was a 72-67 victory on Feb. 11, 2008.
The Cardinals would prefer the game be in Ann Arbor, where Concordia has won the last six games in Cardinal Field House against the Saints.
This year, Concordia will look to guard Marius Williams (Jr. - Belleville, Mich.) and the continued emergence of forward Rocko Holmes (So. - Cadillac, Mich.). However, for the Cards to advance to the semifinal round, they are going to need others to step up and take (and make) the big shot a la their game recently against Aquinas College. In their regular season finale, too many players were looking to Williams in particular to carry the load as Concordia fell to Madonna 62-59.
Williams leads the team in scoring at 17.0 points per game, while Holmes is second at 10.1, while also leading the team in rebounds at 6.3 boards a game.
Against Siena Heights, Williams is averaging 18.5 points while Holmes is averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Chad McMullen (So. - Pinckney, Mich.) is hopefully the player who can provide scoring balance as he has scored in double figures in both of the last two games as he dropped 14 in against Aquinas and followed with 13 against the Crusaders. It was the second time McMullen scored in double figures in back-to-back games this season as he did so on Dec. 4 and Dec. 5 scoring 34 points against Ohio Dominican and Mount Vernon Nazarene combined. For the year, McMullen is averaging 6.4 points but only 5.5 against the Saints.
Several other players are averaging between five and six points on the season and all are capable of providing that spark needed to help the Cardinals prevail: Kyle Barlow (Sr. - Howell, Mich.), Austin Cook (So. - Mt. Clemens, Mich.), Ryan Walton (Fr. - Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Jeremy Simmons (So. - Detroit, Mich.).
Wednesday night, the Cardinals hope to use a little magic much like they did the last time they were in Adrian for a playoff game as Casey Livingston hit a last-second three-point shot from the corner in 2006 sending the Cards to a 63-60 win and a trip for the first-time to the WHAC semifinal round.
