Concordia 1, Madonna 1

(October 31, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Mich)  The Concordia men's soccer team entered Saturday's Halloween contest against Madonna hoping to climb up the WHAC standings and possibly move closer to the ever elusive playoff spot.  Needing a win, the Cardinals had to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie despite playing one of their best games of the season.

The Cardinals (3-7-1, 6-8-3) were looking to avenge a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Crusaders back on September 26. Both teams found themselves trying to catch Davenport in the conference standings to earn a fourth place finish and earn the final playoff spot.

It was evident that both teams each came into the game with similar records as nearly every statistical category was even throughout the game.  Madonna (3-5-3, 3-7-4) barely edged the Cardinals 6-5 in shots on goal and needed a goal off a direct kick to get the game-tying goal.

It looked as things would go Concordia's way early when they scored the first goal of the game on an Ali Badra Diallo (Jr. - Niamey, Niger) that was redirected in goal by a Madonna defender.  The goal was the third of the season for Badra.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the home team entering halftime and would remain that way until 10 minutes into the second half when Madonna would capitalize on a direct kick that went soaring past a diving Kyle Winningham (Fr. - Canton, Mich).  The game would remain tied at the end of regulation and head into overtime.

The Cardinals came out playing aggressive in the first overtime, but a header shot by David Ujkic (Jr. - Novi, Mich) was saved and two blasts by Erik Schultz (Sr. - Belleville, Mich) were off-target to send the game into the second and final overtime.

Both teams had a few chances in the second overtime, but the defense proved stronger as the Cardinals had to settle for a 1-1 tie that would end their playoff hopes.

Five Concordia seniors were playing in their final home game of their career and were honored by the team at halftime.  Keith Jeffery (Madison Heights, Mich), Brian Kressbach (Clinton Twp, Mich), Frank Lucas (Monroe, Mich), Andrew McComas (Brooklyn, Mich) and Erik Schultz were all presented with autographed team soccer balls.

The team still has one final game remaining as they will travel to Indiana Tech on Wednesday for a 4pm game.  The Cardinals struggled in the first game against the Warriors as they suffered their worst loss of the season losing 7-1.  With a victory, Concordia can finish in fifth place in the WHAC standings.
