(Oct. 29, 2009 - Grand Rapids, Mich.) -- Needing at least a win the rest of the way, and losses by Siena Heights University, the playoff hopes of the Concordia volleyball team hang precariously in the balance and each game is critical. On Thursday night, the Cardinals couldn't get any momentum and were quickly dispensed with by the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University 25-16, 25-12, 25-14 dropping Concordia to 2-11 in the WHAC and 11-23 overall.
The loss leaves the Cardinals and SHU in a tie for the final playoff spot with one game remaining. If Concordia loses to Aquinas, then Sien Heights will advance to the playoffs as they hold the tie-breaker after beating the Cardinals twice in conference play (Concordia knocked off the Saints earlier in the season in a non-conference match). If Concordia beats Aquinas, then the Cards need UM-Dearborn to play spoiler by beating Siena Heights (UM-Dearborn enters with one WHAC win).
As for Thursday, Ashley Hart (So. - Birmingham, Mich.) lead the attack with six kills with Samantha Cuppen (Sr. - Port Huron, Mich.) adding four. However, while the Cards registered 26 kills, they also had 23 attack errors.
Jaymee Wise (So. - Irvine, Cal.) finished with 13 assists to lead the team for the second consecutive match. Rachel Compton (Sr. - Whitmore Lake, Mich.) added nine and Ashley Zair (Sr. - West Bloomfield, Mich.) added a pair. Zair also had seven digs with Compton adding two on the defensive end.
Shilo Stewart (Sr. - Brighton, Mich.) was stellar defensively with a team-high 15 digs with Danielle Guss (So. - Lambertville, Mich.) and Katie Matz (Fr.- Livonia, Mich.) adding a half-dozen each.
Cornerstone picked up solid nights from Katie McKee, who had 11 kills and five total blocks, and Alicia TerHaar, who finished with 10 kills, 11 digs and two total blocks. Marcie Blacquiere was superlative with 31 assists and 13 digs for the Golden Eagles.
Unlike the Cards, Cornerstone showed balance on the attack with 38 kills to only 11 attack errors.
Concordia travels to Shawnee State on Saturday afternoon for a trio of non-conference games before facing Aquinas in the regular season finale on Tuesday.
