Siena Heights 2, Concordia 0

(October 7, 2009 - Adrian, Mich) - The Cardinal men's soccer team traveled to Siena Heights on Wednesday looking for a series sweep against the Saints.  However, a Saint goal with less than five minutes to go in the game, and another just prior to the final horn, forced Concordia to settle for a season split.

Concordia (4-6-1, 2-5) came into the game looking for their first conference win since a 2-1 victory over Cornerstone on September 12.  The last time they played Siena Heights the Cardinals won a close fought battle also by the score of 2-1.  Despite being outshot 22-12, Concorida was able to keep the game close right up until the final minutes.

After an evenly played first half in which both teams took seven shots, the Saints came out the more aggressive team in the second as they tripled up the Cardinals in shots and put a lot of pressure on the Concordia defense.

After shots by David Ujkic (Jr. - Novi, Mich) and Yonathan Zeleke ( So. - Lansing, Mich) were saved by the Saint's keeper, Siena Heights would finally get one past Cardinal netminder Kyle Winningham (Fr. - Canton, Mich) for the game winning goal.  The Saints would add one more goal in the closing seconds to seal the victory and move to 5-4-3, 3-3-1 on the season.  Winningham was busy all day as he saved nine shots on the 11 shots on goal.

Concordia now stands in sixth place in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference only one game in front of the last place Madonna Crusaders.  Next up for the Cardinals is a rematch against Aquinas on Saturday at Rummel Field.  The game is part of the First Annual Hall of Fame Day which will also feature the first ever Hall of Fame induction class after the women's noon game and prior to the 3:00 men's kickoff.   Aquinas won the first game against the Cardinals 4-0 on September 16 and sits on top of the conference standings with a record of 5-2 and 8-3 overall.
