Marygrove 1, Concordia 0 (Sept. 30, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Mich) - The Concordia University women's soccer team failed to take advantage of several key scoring opportunities as the majority of their shots sailed high or wide against the upstart Mustangs from Marygrove. The fiesty Mustangs, who came into the game with only 11 players, took advantage of a rebound off an indirect kick to score the game's lone goal.
Concordia dominated everything but the scoreboard as the home team kept
constant pressure on the Mustang defense. Forwards Betty Budd ( Jr. -
Willis, Mich) and Monica Palushaj (Fr. - Northville, Mich) fired off
four shots each but could not get enough on net or past the steady
Marygrove keeper.
The game entered the second half with Concordia holding a 12-2 shot
advantage and Concordia keeper Brittany Davis (Fr. - Bowling Green,
Ohio) facing little action. The half started out in similar fashion as
the Cardinals kept the ball on their offensive end but not able to
capitalize on the time of possession advantage.
Although their shots were few and far between, Marygrove (3-3-1) would
take advantage of an indirect kick at the 75:41 mark off a rebound and
header by Janina Velasco to go ahead 1-0. Cardinal senior Amy
Zuccarell would follow with a shot with eight minutes to go that once again would find its way to the crossbar.
Marygrove would hold on the rest of the way to collect their third win
of the season. With the loss, Concordia falls to 2-7 heading into Saturday's noon matchup with Indiana Tech (2-8, 2-4) at Rummel Field.
The Cardinals are still looking for their first conference win of the season.
