Concordia 2, Rochester 1(Sept. 23, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Mich) The Cardinals won their tenth straight game over the Rochester Warriors and second for the 2009 season winning 2-1 at Rummel Field on Wednesday afternoon. The victory comes off the heels of five consecutive losses including a close match to Davenport on Saturday in which Concordia fell 1-0.
The Cardinals were looking to improve on their solid effort on Saturday
while also aiming for their elusive second win. Both teams got off to a
slow start with few scoring opportunities. However, Concordia would
use their 22-6 shot advantage to eventually end their five game scoring
drought.
Sarah Spader (Sr. - Warren, Mich) Mich) took advantage of a corner kick at the 28:05 mark
to finally get the Cardinals on the board. Her sharp curving shot from
the corner would sail past the Rochester keeper unassisted and put the
home team up by one. The goal was the first of the season for Spader
and fourth of her career.
The Warriors (3-6) would even the score nearly five minutes later when
they would take advantage of a Cardinal foul to capitalize on an
indirect kick. The Heidi Schewe shot found its way past the Concordia
defensive wall and past keeper Brooke Hogan (Fr. - Ypsilanti, Mich) to
tie the game at one. The score would remain knotted at one going into
halftime despite a 13-2 shot advantage for the home team.
Concordia would not wait nearly as long in the second half to find the
back of the net. Lauren Harris (Jr. - Ypsilanti, Mich) would break the
tie when she took a pass from Laura Johnston (Fr. - Ann Arbor, Mich)
and knocked a shot in off the Rochester keeper for her first goal of
the season.
Cardinal second-half goalkeeper Brittany Davis (Fr. - Bowling Green,
Ohio) secured the win for the Cardinals when she charged
out of the net to stop a potential game-tying goal with less than four
minutes to go in the match. Concordia would hold on for the final few minutes to
squeak out the 2-1 win.
The Cardinals (2-5, 0-4) will look for their first two-game winning streak of the season when they head east to Livonia on Saturday to take on the Madonna Crusaders (2-6, 1-3). The game is set for a noon kickoff followed by a 2:30 men's game.
