(July 31, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Michigan) -- Ann Arbor, Michigan is considered by some to be the heart of Midwest football. Concordia University Ann Arbor (CUAA) now joins an elite area list with this month's announcement of a new football program. Football becomes the 14th athletic program at CUAA. The timeline for the program begins with the hiring of a head coach this winter. Based on further study and the success of initial recruitment, the Cardinals could play a club schedule in the fall of 2010, with its intercollegiate schedule starting in 2011.

"This is an exciting moment in the history of our university and athletic department," said Director of Athletics Ben Limback. "As the only small college in Michigan to offer football scholarships, we have a great opportunity to give young men the chance at playing competitive, collegiate football."

CUAA is researching athletic conferences for its team, but has set its eye on the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA), an NAIA affiliated organization, which currently features 16 Midwestern collegiate teams and two leagues: Mideast and Midwest. CUAA intends to pursue membership in the Mideast league and play teams in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

CUAA plans to recruit enough football players to field both varsity and junior varsity teams. Executive Vice President of CUAA, Chuck Winterstein, discussed the decision to pursue a football program, "Football adds to the overall college experience for our students. It builds relationships with the community and our alumni base. Unlike any other sport, football has a connecting power that will strengthen the emotional backing of the university. We are very excited to see this program getting off the ground."
