(June 22, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- The Concordia women's basketball program may have signed it's captain in three or four years when they received a Letter of Intent from Mariah Beckwith, a proven leader from Grand Rapids Central High School.
Beckwith was named to the All-Conference squad this past season after averaging 14.6 points with a half-dozen steals, with three rebounds and four assists a game. Beckwith was ranked as the most profilic thief as she lead the Grand Rapids area in steals, while ranking sixth in scoring.
In addition to being the team captain this past season, Beckwith was named the Outstanding Female Athlete and the school's Athlete of the Year.
"Mariah brings a very high basketball IQ to our program as well as a strong love for the game," said Concordia head coach Andrea Gorski. "She is a tough player who knows how to get to the basket and finish. She is a very coachable player who will bring a positive attitude and strong leadership each and every day."
Beckwith is also a very engaged person in her community as she was class president for two years, a member of both the Ignite and G.E.T. programs. The latter being a program that works within the Girl Scout program, where Beckwith has been heavily involved, having received the Gold Award.
Further, Beckwith served for four years on the principal advisory board, two years on the superintendents board and was a volunteer seventh and eighth grade volleyball coach.
"(Mariah) was very active in seeking out leadership roles in high school," aaid Gorski. "We expect her to continue on with that same ambition here at Concordia."
