(June 1, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- Valerie Carlson will be moving up to the collegiate ranks this fall, but Concordia women's basketball coach Andrea Gorski is hoping the post-player will feel right at home in the paint, as she has the last four years at Gibraltar Carlson High School. During her prep career, Carlson scored 945 points - third all-time - while hauling in 658 rebounds, the all-time record for either girls or boys in school history.

"Val is a great addition to our program and will provide a physical presence for us under the boards," said Gorski. "She is a great rebounder who can also get down the floor and finish."

A four-year letter winner and three-year starter, Carlson lead her team in scoring and rebounding her final three seasons. As a freshman, Carlson finished second on her squad in both categories.

At the conclusion of her junior season, Carlson began picking up accolades for her play as she was named All-Mega Conference, All-League, All-Monroe County and was selected by the News-Herald as a member of the All-Downriver Dream Team.

After a senior season where she lead all area players in scoring, Carlson was again named All-Conference, All-League, All-Monroe County and was named to the News-Herald All-Downriver Dream Team. Her final season, Carlson averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Carlson doesn't reserve her abilities to the hardwood either as she is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and was on the Carlson Honor Roll all for years. Carlson, with a 3.5 GPA, will study science at Concordia.

"The fact that she is an outstanding student is no surprise sicne she has a great work ethic on and off the floor," Gorski said. "She has a great sense of the game and knows how to use her strengths to her advantage."
