(May 26, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- Steve Montgomery, head coach of the cross country and track programs at Concordia University, has had a busy year as he has gone from the fall cross country season to the winter indoor track season and right into the spring outdoor track season. Added to the mix is his recruiting for all the programs trying to fill all the possible spots in the varied sports. Montgomery can cross off another spot as he continues to add talent that can step in right away as he has done with Nick Barden of Flint Powers Catholic High School.
Barden, who has been running since he was six-years-old lettered in cross country and track all four prep seasons at Powers. In his first season, Barden was named Freshman of the Year and capped that off with three straight years qualifying for the State Finals.
"Nick quite possibly could be one of our front runners this season," said Montgomery. "We are hoping Nick has a tremendous career and will help move the program into the upper echelon of NAIA programs in the Midwest."
As dedicated as a runner as Barden is, he is also a passionate and compassionate person. During the last few years, Barden has spent time on three missions trips: a South Dakota Indian reservation his freshman year; a restoration project in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina his sophomore year; and a trip with his father to Guatemala to assist his father at an orphanage.
"I can't wait to continue my running career at Concordia and become a Cardinal," Barden said. "I am also looking forward to expanding my Christian lifestyle and education."
