The new theme for the Cardinal softball team this season
was "Constructing a New Future". First year head coach Marissa Young took over
a struggling program looking to move the team in a new direction and build a
foundation that would lead to more victories not only this year, but in future years
as well.
With only three returning players from last year's team
that only won two games, Coach Young had to quickly put together a team that
could field nine players. In addition,
several late season injuries forced many
players to play out of position due to the thin roster.
Despite having a roster where 8 of the 14 players were
freshmen, the Cardinals played their way to ten wins including five conference
victories. Coach Young was impressed
with the overall effort and ability to persevere through the many obstacles the
team faced throughout the season. "This
year was an enormous challenge for them both as people and as players. Each of them built character, grew as people,
and learned the true characteristics of TEAM.
Our record was a huge improvement from the previous year and everyone is
looking forward to working hard over the summer."
Katie Gallan (So - LaSalle, Mich), Jeni Bollenbacher (Fr -
Edwardsburg, Mich), and Georgia Dewey (Jr - Marine City, Mich) all garnered
All-WHAC Honorable Mention recognition.
Gallan also finished the season in the top five for conference batting
average. Bollenbacher was honored with
the team Pitcher of the Year Award while Dewey was named the team's Player of
the Year.
Freshman Danielle Guss (Lambertville, Mich) was named the
team's Most Improved Player and teammate Laura Kordick (Jr - Plymouth, Mich) was
honored with the Cardinal Award in addition to making the WHAC All-Academic
team.
The Cardinals will head in the off-season with high
expectations for a successful 2010 campaign as their entire roster returns as
well as the addition of eight solid recruits.
