Cornerstone 8, Concordia 0 (6 innings)
The young Concordia softball team entered the conference tournament looking for an upset as the tournament's #7 seed. Unfortunately, the Cardinals bid fell short as they lost to Aquinas and Cornerstone to finish up their 10-36 season.
In the first game against #2 seed Aquinas, Concordia suffered through their worst inning of the season when they gave up 15 runs to the Saints in the top half of the fourth. Aquinas (35-12) put together 11 hits including six singles, four doubles and a home run to go along with three walks and three Cardinal errors.
Concordia scored in the bottom half of the fourth when Catherine Herriman (Fr - Adrian, Mich) singled to start the inning. Herriman eventually scored after taking advantage of two passed balls and an infield error. The Cardinals would score a single run again in the next inning when Breannea King (Fr - Garden City, Mich) singled to centerfield scoring Herriman who had reached on an error.
In the second game of the double elimination tournament, the Cardinals fared better on the defensive end but struggled at the plate as they were blanked in their final game of the season losing to Cornerstone 8-0 in six innings.
Cornerstone (17-33) entered the tournament as the #6 seed and had swept the season series against Concordia. The Golden Eagles took an early lead as they scored once in the first and added to more in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
The score would remain the same until the top of the sixth when Cornerstone would rattle off five runs on four hits and an error to put the game away. The Cardinals failed to string together any of their four hits and was held scoreless by the strong Cornerstone pitching.
Cardinal pitcher Jeni Bollenbacher (Fr - Edwardsburg, Mich) registered the two losses on the day as she finished the season with a 7-23 record.
Cornerstone and Aquinas, as well as UM Dearborn and Madonna, have advanced to the WHAC tournament's last day of play on Monday May 4 in Battle Creek. The WHAC overall winner will head to the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Decatur, AL on May 14-20.
