The Concordia softball team
entered Wednesday's double header looking to go 4-0 against Siena Heights this
season and distance themselves from the Saints in the WHAC standings. While they did not earn the sweep, the
Cardinals were able to take one out of two to win the series 3-1 and record
their fourth conference win.
After losing the first game
9-7 at Cardinal Field, Concordia stormed back from an early 2-0 deficit to win
a close second game by a score of 3-2. Catherine
Herriman (Fr - Adrian, Mich) pitched her way to her fourth win of the season.
The Saints (11-29, 1-11) got out to an
early two run lead in the top of the first inning off a Jessica Singletary
triple that would score Mariah Welke. Singletary
had a hot bat against Cardinal pitchers as she went 3-4 on the day with the
triple as well as two homeruns that cleared the right centerfield fence.
The home team would score all
the runs they needed in the bottom half of the third as they put together a rally that would give them a 3-2 lead. Freshman Karen Greficz (Garden City, Mich) would get things going with
an infield single. After a successful
bunt single by Jeni Bollenbacher (Fr - Edwardsburg, Mich), Georgia Dewey (Jr -
Marine City, Mich) hit a shot to centerfield that would score Greficz. Bollenbacher and Dewey would eventually score
on a passed ball and a throwing error.
The Cardinals are now 4-11 in
the WHAC (9-23 overall) entering Thursday's games against the University of
Michigan - Dearborn. This will be the
first meeting between the two teams. The
doubleheader will start at 4pm at Cardinal Field in Ann Arbor.
