Sophomore Marquis Turley
(February 26, 2009 - Grand Rapids, Mich.) -- For the third time in the last four years the Concordia men's basketball team has seen it's season come to a close on the hardwood at Aquinas College. Unlike the previous two meetings (which ended in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Semifinals), this season the Cards ended a round earlier in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament after a 77-61 loss.
Marquis Turley (So. - Grand Rapids, Mich.), who earlier in the week was named to the WHAC Third Team, lead Concordia in scoring with 20 points while Scott Spencer (Sr. - Armada, Mich.) and Fernando Cardenas (Sr. - Paris, France) played in the final games of their careers and combined for 18 points and eight rebounds.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it didn't take long for Aquinas to take command of the game as they jumped out to a double-digit lead at 12-2 six minutes into the contest. A Spencer triple would pull the Cards to within a half-dozen at 13-7, but a James Telman a little while hit from beyond the three-point arc himself and gave the Saints a 28-17 lead and the advantage would never drop back into single digits.
A three-pointer late in the half by John Lierman pushed the lead to 21 as the Saints went to the break with a comfortable 46-25 lead.
The closest Concordia would get in the second half was an 11-point deficit twice as Turley converted makes on consecutive offensive possessions with a Pedja Lazic basket for Aquinas sandwiched in between. With the Saints up 58-47 with less than eight minutes remaining, Aquinas would outscore Concordia 19-14 the rest of the way to seal the win.
With the win, Aquinas is now set to host Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon with Cornerstone hosting UM-Dearborn, fresh off their upset win over Davenport, on the other side of the bracket.
