Sophomore Marquis Turley
(February 25, 2009 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- Guard Marquis Turley (So. - Grand Rapids, Mich.) lead the Concordia men's basketball team throughout the season and for his efforts was placed on the Third Team by the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference coaches at their season's end meeting this past week. Turley wasn't the only member of the squad to be honored as six different players were recognized for their achievements on and off the basketball court.
Turley, who finished with a team-high 18.0 points per game average, was joined by teammate Jeremy Simmons (Fr. - Detroit, Mich.) who was named to the All-Newcomer team by WHAC coaches. Simmons, who electrifed Cardinal fans with his vicious swats, finished the season with a 6.8 scoring average, 5.3 rebounds and a total of 54 blocked shots, which is fifth all-time for a season.
No player exemplified the work ethic needed to develop as a college athlete than Fernando Cardenas (Sr. - Paris, France), who worked diligently to improve his skills over his career as he finished his final season with a 5.6 scoring average and 3.9 rebounds. For his work ethic and leadership, Cardenas was chosen as the Cards representative on the WHAC Champions of Character team.
Also chosen for his character was head coach Ben Limback, who was selected by his peers as the league's coaching Champion of Character.
Three members of the team were also honored for academic excellence as senior Scott Spencer (Armada, Mich.) was joined by juniors Craig Archer (Marysville, Mich.) and Kyle Barlow (Howell, Mich.) on the WHAC All-Academic team. The award is given to juniors and seniors who have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25.
