Sarah Spader & Amy Zuccarell
Aquinas 1, Concordia 0
(November 1, 2008 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- Already out of the playoff picture, the Concordia women's soccer team looked at their last two games and figured a pair of wins were a great possibility in that their two opponents had tied the Cards in earlier contests this season with Concordia on the road. Saturday afternoon, the Aquinas Saints put only one ball behind keeper Kelly Wurzell, but one was enough as the Cardinals couldn't counter as they fell 1-0 at Rummel Field.
The game, for the most part, was played at midfield with neither team generating a lot of scoring opportunities. In the end, Aquinas finished with eight shots on goal, while the Cardinals had a greater advantage at 14, but no goals.
With 21 minutes remaining in the game, and down 1-0 and looking for more offense, head coach Piote Westwalewicz pulled Wurzell (Sr. - Lambertville, Mich.) and place midfielder Amy Zuccarell (Jr. - Ottawa Lake, Mich.) into goal. While the move didn't pay dividends on the offensive end, Zuccarell held her own and kept the Saints from adding additional goals.
The Saints picked up their goal as Rande Siroky centered a pass to Jessica Greaney who was able to knock a one-timer to the left of the outstretched arms of Wurzell into the corner at 64:46 of the game.
The Cardinals (4-7-3, 1-7-3 WHAC) have one game remaining on the 2008 schedule, a home contest on Thursday, November 6 against Indiana Tech. It will be the final game for a quintet of players: Wurzell, Amanda Adams, Erica Heimsoth, Alison Nowacki and Sarah McLaren.
