(May 21, 2008 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- Steve Montgomery hasn't been the head coach of the cross country team very long, assuming the head job just a few short weeks ago. Not only does he look to build a strong XC program at Concordia, Montgomery has the responsibility of returning a full-fledged track and field program to the Ann Arbor campus. Both programs are to be fully operational this coming season, so Montgomery is excited about the chance to build one, and essentially, create another.

"Because we already have strong commitments from cross country runners, we have some of the distance event runners we'd need," Montgomery said. "Mind you, though, we are still looking for quality runners for our cross country program, as well."

Montgomery said the primary focus right now, as for as track and field is concerned, is to find the necessary sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and throwing-even participants, as well as middle-distance runners.

"We are the only new track and field program starting in Michigan this year," Montgomery said. "So those high school kids who want to continue their track careers have a great opportunity to do so at our campus. I am just thrilled that some quality kids will be able to continue being involved in the sport and know that I had a hand in helping them."

Concordia will be sponsoring both men's and women's cross country in the fall, as well as men's and women's indoor track and field in the winter and men's and women's outdoor track and field in the spring.
