Senior Terra Russell

(April 27, 2008 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- On a day when the Concordia softball program honored their three seniors the Cardinals hung with conference leader Madonna University as long as they could.  Unfortunately Concordia was unable to push across a run against the Crusaders and dropped both games of the season ending doubleheader.

Seniors Amy Claudy (Roscoe, IL), Terra Russell (Garden City, MI), and Kolbe Valenzuela (Whittier,CA) were honored in between games as they played their last games in a Concordia uniform.  While each senior had a hit in Sunday's doubleheader it was not nearly enough as Madonna pitching neutralized the Concordia (2-30, 1-23 WHAC) offense.  The Crusaders swept the doubleheader by final scores of 5-0 and 6-0.

Concordia's best chance to secure a win on the day came in the second game as they trailed 1-0 through five innings.  Freshman pitcher Laura Brabaw (Paris, MI) worked out of several jams to keep the Cards in the game.  In the end Concordia just could not generate any offense and they were shut out on the day.  Madonna scored 5 times in the top of the sixth inning and that lead would stand up for the game two win.

Madonna (30-12-1, 18-4 WHAC) had an easier time in game one as they shot out to a four run lead and added one run in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.  That would be the final margin as Madonna pitcher Jess Irwin was absolutely dominant allowing only one hit and striking out 14 Cardinals.

The doubleheader loss wraps up the season for the Cardinals.  It was without question a frustrating season but the team of head coach Robin Santiago certainly never gave up and competed until the very end of the campaign.  With several young players gaining important experience this year hopefully the foundation is being laid for great things from the Concordia softball program.
