(October 26, 2007 - Grand Rapids, Mich.) -- The Concordia University Women’s Soccer team set a new school record for wins during the 2007 season and the conference definitely took notice as several players were honored Friday by the WHAC for their achievements.

At the end of the 2006 season midfielder Sarah Spader (So.,Warren, MI) was named to the WHAC’s second team.  At the conclusion of her sophomore season Spader was honored again but this season the sophomore from Warren, Michigan was named to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference first team.  Spader lead the Cardinals with six assists and scored her second career goal on September 15 at Cornerstone.

Abby Lorion (Plymouth, MI) set a new Concordia freshman record with nine goals this season and she was honored by the WHAC by being named second team all-conference. In addition to leading the Cards with nine goals Lorion chipped in with three assists and also lead Concordia with 21 points on the season.  The Plymouth Christian product scored three game winning goals for the Cards and anyone who watched her play this season is looking for great things from Lorion over the next three seasons.

Two Cardinal junior defenders were honored by being named to the honorable mention all-conference team.  Goalkeeper Kelly Wurzell (Lambertville, MI) notched 109 saves and three shutouts in net for Concordia this season.  She was already honored during the season by being named conference defensive player of the week twice.  Wurzell was also named NAIA Region VIII defensive player of the week for a week in which she held Cornerstone to a single goal in a draw and shut out Davenport University.  Erika Heimsoth (St. John's,MI) was also named to the honorable mention all-conference team following a season where she was a consistent factor on defense for the Cards but was also a major contributor to the Concordia offensive attack.  Heimsoth scored her first career goal in a win at Tri-State and added a game winning assist on a corner kick in Concordia’s 3-2 overtime win over Indiana Tech.

Senior Natalie Brown (Milan, MI) wrapped up her illustrious career this year for Concordia and she was honored by being named to the WHAC’s Champions of Character.  The team honors athletes who show strong character and sportsmanship both on and off of the field.  Brown ended her career as Concordia’s all time leader in assists and she also ranks in the top five all-time at Concordia for goals scored.

Natalie Brown and this Concordia senior class have seen the program become competitive within the conference as they played each team in the WHAC this year to win, tie or close decision.  The honors from the conference on Friday cap off a record setting season and are further proof that the Concordia soccer program is unquestionably on the rise.
