The Concordia men's tennis team concluded their fall season with a win against Mount Vernon Nazarene. The team traveled to Ramser Tennis Courts on the campus of Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday afternoon and defeated the Cougars 7-2. It was the first win for the Cardinals this fall after playing a competitive schedule.
The Cardinals were led by Jacob Baxter (JR/Farmington Hills, MI), A.J. Janssen, J.T. Clark, as each earned two points for the team. Jacob Baxter and A.J. Janssen dominated 2nd doubles 8-1 and also won their singles matches at 2nd singles and 3rd singles respectively. Baxter controlled his opponent, Logan Gauthier 6-3, 6-4 while Janssen used a thrilling double set tie-breaker to finish Zackory Dohner (6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-4).
Despite being short-handed this fall due to injuries and eligibility, Head Coach Boettcher saw a lot of growth and believes there is potential for this group in the spring. "We had to use some different combinations this fall and try guys at different positions, said Boettcher. I think it was a great learning experience for everyone and we look forward to continue to fine tune some areas this winter as we head into the spring."
Looking forward to the spring, the Cardinals plan on being at full strength with the roster as they prepare for the competitive WHAC programs. The WHAC historically features teams in the top ranks of the NAIA Coaches's Top 25 poll. The postseason poll on May 23rd featured #5 University of Northwestern Ohio, #21 Lawrence Tech University, #23 Aquinas all held spots in the top 25 with Cornerstone just on the outside receiving votes.
The Cardinals will tip off the spring season in early February with the schedule set to be released soon.
