(Ann Arbor, MI) The men's bowling team competed in their second tournament in as many weeks, taking their talents to Indiana for the 2017 Boilermaker Classic hosted by Purdue University. The Cardinals once again competed against top level talent and respectable institutions as a final tune-up for the first WHAC Jamboree. The Cardinals placed 8th overall with a score of 7643 in a field of 20 total teams.
Leading the way for the Cardinals with a consistent average of 197.80 was 2016 all-american Zachary Hazel (JR/Chelsea, MI). Hazel bowled an individual game high of 2013 and placed 23rd overall in the competitive field. Last week's top bowler for the Cardinals was Alex Ouellette (JR/Linden, MI) and he continued his momentum into the Boilermaker Classic. Ouellette finished on the heals of Hazel with a 25th place finish for an average of 195.80. Ouellette's top round for the day was 206.
Head Coach Doug Spicer was proud of the team's effort and performance. "The guys showed a lot of determination and held together through some tough games, said Spicer. They rebounded back at the end to maintain their position amongst a very strong field."
St. Ambrose won the event with a score of 8262 followed by Robert Morris and Calumet College of St. Joseph. Division I institutions participating in the event included Purdue, Illinois State, Saint Xavier, Northern Kentucky, Missouri, Miami (OH), and Indiana State. The Cardinals placed higher than all those teams. There were no other WHAC teams competing at the event.
After two weeks of tune-ups, the Cardinals will now shift their focus to WHAC Jamboree #1. The jamboree will take place on Saturday, October 7th and will be hosted by Siena Heights University at Lenawee Lanes. Last year, the Cardinals had their best outing at the final jamboree of the season finishing in 2nd place overall. Coach Spicer looks to get his team back to the top this season with a solid performance this weekend. The jamboree is set to begin at 8am
