(Ann Arbor, MI) The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference announced their weekly awards on Monday afternoon and Concordia's goalkeeper Maria Lulgjuraj (JR/West Bloomfield, MI)an> (JR/West Bloomfield, MI) has been named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Lulgjuraj's recognition comes after leading the Cardinals to wins last week over WHAC opponents. Lulgjuraj was instrumental in the Cardinals upset win over (RV) Siena Heights on Wednesday after the junior goal keeper recorded a career high 11 saves. This exceeded her previous career high of 10 saves against Ferris State in which she was named the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week after that performance as well.
The Cardinals 2-1 comeback win over the Saints came in dramatic fashion as Lulgjuraj had to make several heroic saves to preserve the victory. A dominate 11-1 performance by the Cardinals offense forced Lulgjuraj into limited minutes and another win for the junior standout.
Lulgjuraj has been a consistent defensive force for the Cardinals this season and continues to be among the statistical leaders in the WHAC. Lulgjuraj currently ranks 2nd in total saves (56), 3rd in saves per game (5.60), and T- 4th in shutouts (2). This is the third time in Lulgjuraj's career that she has received the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week honor.
The Cardinals will travel to Grand Rapids on Tuesday night at 7:00pm to face Cornerstone University and then host the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday in a double header with the women.
