(Ann Arbor, MI) After recording a career day in his first start this fall last weekend, senior lefty Marshall Oetting (SR/Concordia, MO) bested his own outing with a complete game no-hitter on Saturday against Rochester College. As a result, Oetting was named the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Coach Johnston kept the same pitching line-up in the team's second fall series of the season. Oetting started game two against Indiana Tech and helped the Cardinals earn their first win of the season with a career high 12 strikeouts and only 4 hits in 8 innings. Johnston called Oetting's number in game two against Rochester College, and the left responded with another career day. Oetting went the distance in the no-hitter and only allowed 3 walks while striking out 9 batters.
The Cardinals swept the Warriors scoring 30 runs in 3 games and improved their overall record to 4-2.
Through two starts this fall, Oetting leads the team and WHAC with 17 total innings pitched with 21 strikeouts while limiting to opposing batters to an average of .074. Oetting has not allowed a run in either start as well. Oetting received this honor once last spring after a complete game 1-0 win over #7 Southeastern. Last season, Oetting started 16 games for the Cardinals with a 2.29 ERA and 8-3 record overall in 98 innings of work. Teams struggled against Oetting only batting 2.11 which was the lowest for WHAC starters.
The Cardinals will face Cornerstone for their last fall series. The Golden Eagles will host the Cardinals on Friday night at 7pm with the first pitch of the double-header set to be at 1pm on Saturday. All three games will be played on the campus of Cornerstone Unversity at DeWitt Field.
