The Concordia University men's soccer team appeared in their first action since the Concordia Invitational last weekend and extended their win streak to two games. The Cardinals came out strong from the opening whistle and defeated the Cardinals of Andrews University 9-0. It was the second shutout for the Cardinals this season and was a complete team effort all-around.
Freshman mid-fielder Phillip Vrzovski (FR/Livonia, MI) led the offensive attack putting the Cardinals on the board less than 2 minutes into the game. Vrzovski headed a ball on a beautiful assists from Nathan Bergenson (JR/Canton, MI) and Joshua Posuniak (SO/Canton, MI). Vrzovski would add another goal in the 17' minute and later added two assists to his day's total.
Coach Schultz was pleased with the team's aggressiveness and unselfishness. "It was a great all-around team win. We were aggressive from the start and was really pleased with our ability to make the extra pass. We controlled the possession game and really played unselfish."
The Cardinals added three goals in the 2nd half when Anthony Tucker knocked in his second goal of the game. Jacob Bailey (JR/Garden City, MI) and James Falk (SO/Garden City, MI) also contributed to the total by scoring their first goals of the season. The Cardinals unselfish play led to goals by 7 different players. 36 shots were fired by the Cardinals compared to 4 for Andrews University with 22 of those on goal.
Spencer Ward (SO/Rochester, MI) stopped 2 shots leading to his second shutout of the season.
The Cardinals schedule will now take them on the road for their next 5 matches with the first one coming on September, 15th when the team takes on Taylor University. The Cardinals next home game will be Tuesday, October 3rd against WHAC opponent, Cornerstone. The match is scheduled to start at 2pm.
