(Chicago, IL) The Concordia men's soccer team traveled to Concordia University Chicago for the inaugural Concordia Invitational Tournament earning a split on their two games. The Cardinals faced Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday morning and fell to the Falcons, 2-0 before responding with a win on Saturday afternoon over Concordia University Chicago, 2-1.
The Falcons jumped on the Cardinals early scoring in the 4th minute off a shot by forward Ryan Kreuser. The Falcons would be the aggressor for most of the 1st half forcing 12 shots compared to the Cardinals 4. Anthony Tucker (SO/Canton, MI) paced the Cardinals with three total shots and 1 on goal. Khadim Mbaye (JR/Senegal) and Bryce Pederson (SR/Dexter, MI), and Daniel Lynch (SO/Brampton, Ontario) were the other Cardinals to have shots threaten on goal.
Falcons goalie would record the shutout win with 6 saves as the Falcons added a goal with 6 seconds left in the match.
In game two on Saturday afternoon the Cardinals rallied in the 2nd half to score 2 goals. Similarly to the game before, the Cougars jumped on the Cardinals early scoring in the 5th minute off a defensive breakdown. The Cardinals went into the half down 1-0 as Coach Schultz made some adjustments for the 2nd half. Several personal changes were made to kickstart the offense and the players responded accordingly.
The trio of Phil Vrzovski, Joshua Posuniak (SO/Canton, MI), and Anthony Tucker took it upon themselves to lead the Cardinals offensive charge in the 2nd half. Vrzovski netted the equalizer in the 53' on a crossed ball from Anthony Tucker. Seven minutes later, Joshua Posuniak scored the go-ahead goal on a one timer off another crossed ball, this time from Vrzovski.
The Cardinals improved their overall record to 2-1 on the young season. The Cardinals will return to their home field for a Friday afternoon match on September 8th against Andrews University. The two teams squared off last year with CUAA winning 5-0. It will be Andrews' first match of the 2017 season.
