(Ann Arbor, MI) Stephanie Johnston (JR/Brantford, ON) will be representing Concordia May 25th-27th at the NAIA Women's Outdoor Track & Field National Championship. The championship will take place in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where Johnston will run in both the 10,000-meter (10k) and 5,000-meter (5k) races.
Johnston is no stranger to the national stage as she has run for the Cardinals at both the Cross Country and Indoor NAIA championships twice in her career. Not only has she qualified for these championships, but she has succeeded in them as well, earning All-American honors once in Cross Country and twice in Indoor Track and Field. While the distance runner is used to the big stage, this is her first chance to race at nationals in Outdoor.
Head Track and Field Coach Andrew Tirmenstein recognizes the unique opportunity Stephanie has. "With her now qualifying for outdoor nationals she lines herself up to potentially being an All-American in three sports this year, which is an incredible feat."
Johnston's long weekend will begin on May 25th with the 10k final at 7:50 pm (CDT). The Brantford, Ontario, native currently has the 9th fastest time in the nation as she ran a 37:13.28 race to qualify at the Don Kleinow Invitational. That qualifying time broke a school record at the Siena Heights meet in May.
The next day, the Junior will be back on the track with the 5k trials at 6:10 pm (CDT). Steph currently sits at 21st with a 17:39.71 time. Johnston recorded the qualifying time in her most recent effort at the WHAC Championship. Her 1st place race was also a school and personal record.
Stephanie has the potential to run for a third day in a row on May 27th if she qualifies for the 5k final at 5:30 pm (CDT).
"Coach T" knows triple All-American status will not come easily. "While doing the 10k and 5k at the national meet is very difficult, Steph is confident in the way she's trained and feels she's set up to be competitive in both races."
"Steph is an amazing young lady who is dedicated to being the best athlete she can be. The amount of hours she puts in throughout the year is incredible, and it's great to see her blossom this year into a perennial national level athlete. We coaches are ecstatic to watch her every day, and can't wait to see what she does next week."
