Heading into Wednesday's WHAC matchup both the Concordia Cardinals (7-7-1, 3-7-1 WHAC)and Aquinas Saints had plenty to play for.  The Cardinals were trying to build on the success of last week and add onto their school record for wins while the Saints were in position to clinch a share of the conference championship.

 

Aquinas (13-3, 9-2 WHAC) controlled most of the offense on the day outshooting Concordia 25 to 12.  The Cardinal defense held up for the majority of the match but Aquinas scored two goals in a six minute span in the first half and the two tallies were all they would need to secure the win.

 

The match was scoreless for the first twenty minutes but the Saints found the net in the 22nd and 27th minute and did not look back.  It was the second time Concordia was shut out by Aquinas this year as they fell in Ann Arbor by one goal in overtime.

 

Kelly Wurzell (Jr., Lambertville, MI) who was named WHAC and NAIA Region VIII defensive player of the week on Tuesday made ten saves and junior Erika Heimsoth (St. John's, MI) lead the Cardinals with three shots.  Much like the first meeting the Saints were able to keep the Cardinal offense at bay for the majority of the match.

 

The Cardinals will still have a chance to end their record setting season on a very positive note when they travel to Ft. Wayne, Indiana for their season finale against the Indiana Tech Warriors on Saturday October 20.  The Cards already hold a win over Indiana Tech as they defeated them earlier this season 3-2 in Ann Arbor.  The game is scheduled for a 12 pm start.
