(Toledo, OH) The Concordia baseball team pulled off the first upset of the WHAC Baseball Tournament by scoring 6 runs in the top of the 9th to defeat third-seeded Indiana Tech, 7-2. With the majority of the tournament being played at University of Northwestern Ohio, the two teams squared off at the beautiful Mercy Field (home field of Lourdes University).
Concordia entered the contest with a road record of 20-2 and carried that confidence to Ohio despite not having scored a run their last two games. The bats awoke just in time with the Cardinals rallying behind Patrick Downing (SO/Canton, MI)'s 2-RBI hit to give them the lead for good.
Junior lefty Marshall Oetting (JR/Concordia, MO) earned the nod for the Cardinals and was effective through 6.2 innings of work. A lead-off double in the third inning by Tech's Peyton Newsome would eventually score on a two out single from Charlie Sipe. The Warriors scored the same way in the 6th when Glen McClain eventually scored after leading off the inning with a double.
The Cardinals got one of the runs back in the 7th thanks to a double by Omar Prieto (JR/Levittown, Puerto Rico ). Blaine Milheim (SO/Eaton Rapids, MI)'s patience at the plate paid off as he walked with two outs. Prieto recorded his 2nd double of the game to cut the deficit in half 1-2.
Jimmy McKane (SO/Saint Johns, MI) and Austin Atwood (SO/Dearborn, MI) would tag team relief efforts in the last three innings to keep the Cardinals within striking distance. With two on and two outs in the bottom of the 8th, Atwood struck out pinch hitter Dossen.
Head Coach Zach Johnston's relied on the heart of his lineup to come through in the 9th. The team's offensive leader and 1st Team All-Conference selection, Jacob Maas (JR/Milan, MI) hustled an infield hit to lead-off the inning. Back to back bunts by Brad Spieldenner (JR/Scotts, MI) and Blaine Milheim forced a Warriors error and runners to advance. Omar Prieto walked to load the bases for Patrick Downing. Looking for his first hit of the game, the sophomore center fielder, singled up the middle on a 2-1 count to score Maas and Spieldenner to give the Cardinals the first lead of the game, 3-1.
After Justin Mercer (SO/Howell, MI) popped out to 2nd base, Gabe Farr (SR/Grand Ledge, MI) kept the inning going with a single up the middle to load the bases for Micah Oetting (JR/Concordia, MO). The Jr. shortstop singled up the middle on an 0-1 count to score two more Cardinals runs extending the lead, 5-2. Ben Balgaard (JR/Fenton, MI) doubled the next at bat to score Farr and Oetting and giving the Cardinals their biggest lead of the game, 7-2.
Atwood retired the side to earn his fifth relief win of the season (5-0).
The Cardinals headed to Lima, Ohio immediately after the game where they will now face two-seeded Davenport Monday morning at 10am.
Patrick Downing's 2 RBI single gives the Cardinals a 3-2 lead in the 9th
