(Grand Rapids, MI) The women's track team culminated their 2017 season at the WHAC Championship hosted by Davenport University last Friday and Saturday. The two day event featured athletes defeating chilly and wet weather conditions for a chance to win their individual event or team championship at the pinnacle meet of the season.
The Cardinals finished 7th overall with 11 points placing ahead of Madonna. The top three teams were were separated by only 2 points with Siena Heights winning the WHAC Championship with a team total of 176 followed closely by Aquinas (175) and Indiana Tech (174).
Stephanie Johnston (JR/Brantford, ON) once again led the Cardinals with a record breaking race in the 5000 meter event. Johnston placed 1st overall with a time of 17:39 breaking her own personal and school record of 17:40. Johnston reached the NAIA B standard which currently has standout runner with the 21st fastest time among NAIA runners. Johnston's first place finish helped the Cardinals earn 10 team points.
Other notable highlights from the WHAC Championship
- 4 x 800m Relay – The relay team of Katherine Fowler (JR/Riga, MI), Elizabeth Larsen (FR), Kelsey Riley (SR/Milford, MI), and Alexus Weber, earned the Cardinals other team point with a time of 13:07.35 and a 6th place finish.
- 100H – Rebecaa McDonald broke her own personal record and set the school record with her season best 15.77 in the 100m hurdles. McDonald placed 14th overall. McDonald also participated in the long jump (16'8", 14th) and 4x1 (43.41, 7th) to complete her busy but successful day
- Women's 5000m – In addition to Johnston's 1st place finish, the Cardinals were well represented in a loaded and talented field. Courtney Dykema (JR/Birch Run, MI) continued to shave time off her personal best with a time of 19:18.37 to finish 8th overall. Amber Streeter (FR) was about a minute behind Dykema with a time of 20:14.63 (19th overall) with Brie Schofield (SR/Belleville, MI) rounding out the Cardinals participants at with a time of 21:19.57 (26th)
- 400m Hurdles – Alex Homann (FR) and Megan Dophal (SO/Hartland, MI) both set personal records in only their second time this season and participants in the event. Homann significantly shaved time off her best with a performance of 1:11.80 (11th). Dophal's time came in at 1:15.17 good enough for 15th overall.
Several Cardinals were recognized upon completion of the WHAC Championship at the awards ceremony. Sidney Bosley (SR/Canton, GA), Courtney Dykema, Katherine Fowler, Stephanie Johnston, Kelsey Riley, and Brie Schofield were named to the WHAC All-Academic team for maintaining their 3.25 cumulative GPA. Several individuals will look to extend their season at the Grand Valley State Last Chance meet next Friday and Saturday (May 12th and 13th. Sidney Bosley, Courtney Dykema, Katherine Fowler, Stephanie Johnston, Kelsey Riley, and Brie Schofield were named to the WHAC All-Academic team for maintaining their 3.25 cumulative GPA. Brie Schofield was also tabbed Concordia's representiaive for the WHAC's Champions of Character team.
