(Ann Arbor, MI) With the regular season coming to a close and the WHAC tournament just around the corner, the Wolverine – Hoosier Athletic Conference has announced the 2017 season softball awards. Samantha Capuzzi (JR/Temecula, CA), Amy Trionfi (SR/Allen Park, MI), Amanda Benezra (SR/La Quinta, CA), and Jessica England (JR/Fowlerville, MI) were honored by the WHAC for their work on the field and in the classroom.
Amy Trionfi led Concordia in multiple categories at the plate including batting average (.343), slugging percentage (.494), runs scored (32), hits (59), and doubles (14). On April 27th, Concordia hosted a double header against Cleary University. In the bottom of the 6th in game one, Amy stepped up to the plate and hit a solo home run to give the Cardinals the 3-2 victory. That home run put her first all time in career hits in school history. Amy currently sits at 213 career hits and is tied for 1st all time with 48 career doubles
Samantha Capuzzi recorded a .279 average at the plate with a .471 slugging percentage and led the Cardinals in runs batted in with 30. Capuzzi was also solid in the field with a 94.7 fielding percentage including 63 putouts. Capuzzi was a repeat from last year as she made 1st team All-Conference as well as the All-Defense Team.
Jessica England and Sam Capuzzi were named to the WHAC All-Academic team for their work in the classroom this year. Qualified members must be of junior academic status and maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Senior second baseman Amanda Benezra was named Concordia's representive to the WHAC Champions of Character team.
The Cardinals will face the University of Michigan Dearborn in the first round of the WHAC tournament Wednesday evening. After finishing the regular season at 11-9 the Cardinals earned the 6th seed while the Wolverines locked in the 3rd seed after an impressive 16-4 WHAC record. The Wolverines swept the Cardinals this year, making a comeback to win game 1, 11-10 and eventually running away with game 2, 1-13. The Cardinals and Wolverines will square off at 6pm at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, OH. For a complete bracket and game times visit the WHAC website here.
