(Ada, OH) After a stretch of conference matches, the Concordia Men's Tennis team rounded out their season with a road trip to face two team different teams in Ohio. The Cardinals faced a pair of non-conference foes, and came back home with two, well-fought wins. Concordia defeated Defiance College 6-3, and went on to beat Ohio Northern, with a score of 5-4.
The Cards started off hot, winning all three of their doubles matches against Defiance. Heading into singles, Alexander Janssen (FR/Galesburg, MI) and Ryan Curtis (FR/Brighton, MI) led off with quick victories to assure the match was won. Mitchell Zacharias (FR/Grosse Pointe, MI) followed up with a two-set rout of his opponent to give the Cardinals their sixth point on the Yellow Jackets.
In their second match of the day, the Cards played a back and forth effort with the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern. Tyler Tweedale (SO/Munising, MI) and Jacob Baxter (SO/Farmington Hills, MI) started things off with an 8-6 doubles triumph to give Concordia the early edge. Gustavo Lozada (SO) and Alexander Koziel (JR/Oglesby, IL) earned another doubles "W" to expound upon the Cardinals' advantage over Ohio Northern.
After losing their third doubles match, the Cards bounced back by ways of Lozada, who won his singles match in two sets. The Polar Bears would not go down easily, as they took the next three singles matches, giving them the 4-3 lead. After dropping his first set, Alexander Koziel pulled through for Concordia, winning his last two sets in come from behind fashion, equalizing the match at 4-4. It then all came down to Ryan Curtis, who was in his third set after taking the first, but suffering a loss in his second. With the pressure on, Curtis emerged victorious, winning his set and the match for the Cardinals.
Now at the end of their regular season, the Cardinals will head to Lima, Ohio this Friday to compete in the WHAC tournament. Concordia is set to square off against the #17 Saints of Aquinas.
