(Grand Rapids, MI) Concordia women's tennis won their second Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference dual in as many weeks with a victory over Cornerstone University on Monday. The Cardinals earned their first ever conference win over Indiana Institute of Technology last week.
The 5-4 edge over the Golden Eagles came behind a strong double performance in which all three flights were triumphant. Mackenzie Devine (JR/Rochester Hills, MI) and Kaylee Tucker (SO/Garden City, MI) won 8-5 at first doubles, Alex Beall (SR/Muskegon, MI) and Sarah Wakefield (SO/Fenton, MI) won 8-2 at second doubles, and Amy Dalian (SO/Saline, MI) and Kayla Verhelle (FR/Clinton Township, MI) won 8-3 at third doubles.
Wakefield and Dalian sealed the 5-4 CUAA victory in their respective singles matches. Wakefield beat Kali Holmes (6-2, 6-1) and Dalian beat Maddy Grose in a tiebreaker (3-6, 6-4, 10-2).
"All three doubles' teams played with toughness, and togetherness, which helped us get off to a good start," Coach Kirk Boetcher commented after the match. "Then it was great to see Sarah and Amy played well in their singles matches to secure the victory."
The Cardinals had little time to celebrate with a matchup against first place and NAIA fifth-ranked Northwestern Ohio today. The strong Racers team won the dual, 7-2 with CUAA wins coming at third doubles and sixth singles.
Concordia (3-13, 2-3 WHAC) wraps up their 2016-17 season against Aquinas tomorrow, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. The matches will be held on CUAA's home courts at the Chippewa Tennis Club in Ypsilanti, MI.
