Junior Kelly Wurzell
(October 16, 2007 - Kansas City, MO.) -- Concordia junior goalkeeper Kelly Wurzell (Lambertville, MI) received another honor on Tuesday when she was named Region VIII player of the week by the NAIA. The accolade comes one day after Wurzell was named WHAC defensive player of the week for the second time this season.
When the Concordia women's soccer team defeated Davenport at Rummel Field last Sautrday it completed what was a very successful week for the Cardinals. The win over the Panthers propelled Concordia to a school record for wins in a season and the shut out over Davenport combined with a draw against Cornerstone has lead to the Cardinals receiving multiple individual awards this week.
The first awards came Monday when Kelly Wurzell and Megan Romer (Sr., Canton, MI) were named conference defensive and offensive players of the week respectively. Wurzell was honored again on Tuesday with the regional award from the NAIA.
In her junior season Wurzell has been a fixture in net for the Cardinals and last week may have been her best week of the campaign. She recorded twelve saves in the 1-1 tie against Cornerstone and made several clutch game saving plays in regulation and overtime. Wurzell followed up that performance with a shut out of Davenport on Saturday in which she notched seven saves. For the week Wurzell was in net for 200 minutes and only allowed a single goal.
The honor is the first regional accolade for a women's soccer player this season. In just under three full seasons at Concordia Wurzell has made a huge impact on the Cardinal soccer program and has also put her mark on the all time record book. Wurzell is the all-time Concordia leader in shut outs and currently ranks second all-time in saves.
The Cards will wrap up their season this week with two road contests. They will face the Aquinas Saints Wednesday October 17 and will take on Indiana Tech on Saturday October 20. The Cardinals played overtime matches against both squads earlier this year. Concordia fell to Aquinas 1-0 and the Cardinals defeated Indiana Tech 3-2.
