(Ann Arbor, MI) Two first year men's lacrosse programs took to Cardinal Stadium looking for their first WHAC win. The Cardinals defended their home turf and defeated the Crusaders of Madonna in commanding fashion 18-4. The contest was the season finale for Head Coach Nick Zoroya's team at Cardinals Stadium and they certainly made it a memorable one.
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick start with Brendan Beerer (FR/Royal Oak, MI) scoring the game's first goal on an unassisted play at the 12:32 mark. The Crusaders quickly responded with two goals of their own and held their only lead of the game for about five minutes. Brendan Beerer tied the game at 2-2 on an assist from Oliver Niedzwiecki (FR/Toledo, OH) with 6:22 left in the first half. Beerer's goal was the start of 8 unanswered goals by the Cardinals. Five different Cardinals scored goals during that stretch and held a 9-2 advantage at halftime.
The Cardinals controlled possessions throughout most of the first half and held a wide margin with the number of shots on goal in the 2nd quarter alone. The Cardinals outshot the Crusaders 21-3 leading to a 40-11 advantage overall.
Conner Ludeman (FR/Whitehouse, OH) led the Cardinals offensive charge in the second half scoring 3 goals in the 3rd quarter alone. Ludeman would go on to score a team high 6 goals and record 4 assists.
The Cardinals closed out the game strong scoring the last 5 goals of the game to secure their first WHAC win in program history.
Leading the way for the Cardinals defensively was goalie Reggie Thompson (FR/Chicago, IL) with 8 total saves. Seven of Thompson's saves came in the second half when the Crusaders were looking to get back into the game.
Brendan Beerer controlled possessions for the Cardinals with a team high 9 draw controls while Tim Saubert hauled in 10 ground balls.
The Cardinals will conclude their inaugural season this Saturday, April 8th at #8 Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, IN. The Warriors are currently 8-3 overall and carry a 4-1 mark in the league.
