(Ann Arbor, MI) The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced their weekly awards today and Jacob Maas (JR/Milan, MI) has been named Player of the Week. This is the third time this season that Maas has received the honor. The junior outfielder continues to lead the Cardinals in many statistical categories and helped the team reach 30 wins after sweeping Marygrove last weekend. This is the second consecutive year the Cardinals have reached 30 wins in a season under third year Head Coach Zach Johnston.
The Cardinals currently ride an 8 game win streak after defeating Cleary in two games and Marygrove this past weekend. In the five games, Maas recorded a hit in every game batting .471 (8-17), scored 10 runs, and knocked in 7 runs while also stealing 5 bases.
Maas also hit a home run in 4 of the games increasing his total to 13 on the season. The home run was Maas' team leading 13th of the season and placed him 1st in the Cardinals record books for home runs in a season. The previous record was 11 by Jake Pawlak in 2003. This gives Maas 15 for his career which places him 3rd between two Cardinal Hall of Famers, Eric Cassidy (16) and Steve Hardin (12). Jake Pawlak holds the career record with 24 home runs.
Maas' impressive numbers in key statistical categories rank him among the WHAC and NAIA leaders. Maas leads the WHAC in home runs (13), 6th in batting average (.402), 2nd in slugging percentage (.829), T-2nd in on base % (.503), 2nd in runs scored (45), T-5th in hits (47), T-3rd in RBI, and 1st in total bases (97). His 4 runs scored on Saturday afternoon was a career high. Among the NAIA leaders, Maas is 9th in home runs, 10th in slugging percentage, 15th in total runs scored, 21st in total bases, and 24th total runs batted in.
