(October 15, 2007 - Grand Rapids, Mich.) -- The announcement of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference's weekly awards capped off what was an unbelievable week for Concordia University women' soccer. Following a two game stretch in which Concordia tied Cornerstone University and shut out Davenport University two Cardinals were named the WHAC players of the week. Junior Kelly Wurzell (Lambertville, MI) was named defensive player of the week for the second time this season and senior Megan Romer (Canton, MI) was named conference offensive player of the week following her game tying goal against Cornerstone and her two goal one assist game on senior day against the Davenport Panthers.
Junior goalkeeper Kelly Wurzell was also honored by the WHAC by being named the defensive player of the week. Wurzell made twelve saves against Cornerstone several of which were of the remarkable fashion and kept the game deadlocked in the game's closing minutes. Wurzell then made seven saves in the shut out of Davenport on Saturday. In 200 minutes of play for the week Wurzell allowed only one goal. Wurzell also received the honor from the WHAC on September 24.
The Cardinal women's soccer team has completed their home schedule but they will be back in action Wednesday October 17 when they play a road match at conference leader Aquinas College. When the Cardinals and Saints hooked up earlier this season in Ann Arbor the Saints pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory. The Cardinals have been competitive with every team in conference this year and they will go to Aquinas riding a wave of positive momentum. The game is scheduled for a 4 pm start.
